Reflections (by Teresa Thomas-Carroll)

“You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Kids across the country are getting set to learn and do all sorts of things they believe they can’t succeed in. No matter our age, the call of the school year gets us thinking about what we want to learn and brings with it some anxiety. Kids don’t have much of a choice but to dive in whether it’s the next level of math, a new activity in gym class or writing papers that assert their opinions. As adults, it’s easy to put off our more challenging goals and hold them as distant dreams. This year, let’s allow Autumn’s bell call us to settle in, knuckle down and get to work. Whatever we’ve been yearning to learn or experience, this seems the perfect time to begin.

To help us prepare, let’s remember what we did as children to gear up for the school year. A fresh notebook or journal is an easy way to start. In it, we can write out what we want to experience and a game plan to make it happen. We can journal about our fears and counter them with affirmations on how we’ll forge ahead. An adjustment to our schedules may be in order. Clearing our desks or other workspaces also helps to clear our minds to take in new information. While we go through our fall wardrobes, let’s choose refreshing clothing combinations to get us feeling confident and in the mood to take on our next adventures. If we sign up for a class or make a pact with a friend, our learning experience will become even more tangible.

What have you been longing to do but have felt it impossible? How about making this the time for it to happen!

Get yourself ready for your next learning adventure with the Mini-Reflection Exercise.

Mini-Reflection Exercise

Use this checklist to get yourself set to experience what you think you cannot do.

Make a list of things you want to learn or experience but have felt you could not, perhaps because of lack of time, courage or motivation. (This doesn’t necessarily have to be adding something to your plate. For instance, you might want to learn how to relax or speak your mind more often.)

Circle the things that you really want to accomplish in your lifetime.

Place a star next to the thing that you most want to happen.

In a notebook or journal, write out a simple description of what you’d like to do (e.g. “I’m going to write that book”, “I’m going to become expert at making sushi” or “I’m going to speak my mind”…)

On the next page write a list of your perceived obstacles. Then go through and cross each one off and follow it by an affirmation of how you can make it happen. (e.g. I don’t have enough time à Instead of TV on Monday nights, I will designate that time to my endeavor.)

Tell some supportive friends what you are going to do and ask them to give you encouragement.

Set a time to celebrate your accomplishment!
