Reflections (by Teresa Thomas-Carroll)

We received nice responses to our September newsletter, Wheels. The inspiration came from our certified

life coach, Barb Plunkett. Barb often uses the metaphor of a bicycle to describe how we handle the flow of

work. Since so many of you found it useful, we thought you’d enjoy pushing the metaphor further:

Let’s continue to think of how we approach our careers, or any of our life’s work, as the way we ride a bicycle. When our bike is tuned up and we are riding at a brisk (but safe) speed, we get exercise, appreciate the scenery and reach our destination. At a steady pace, we have an easier time noticing and avoiding upcoming hazards.

One could assume that the more slowly and cautiously we go, the more secure we’ll be. But when we ride too slowly even a small stone can throw us off our path. It’s difficult to be confidently balanced. We may want to give up and go home since we’re not getting far. Alternatively, if we ride too fast we may feel a thrill and get where we want to go a little quicker. But if we hit an obstacle, we’re likely to go careening head over heals.

Of course, our speed won’t be the same through the entire length of the course. When we reach a hill, we slow down, but we meet the challenge by peddling harder and putting our weight into it. We fly down hills but let ourselves coast and apply the brakes when it gets to be too much. This variety keeps our voyage interesting.

Use the
Mini-Reflection Exercise  to contemplate whether you need to slow down or pick up the pace in order to feel confident on your way.

Mini-Reflection Exercise

Think of your work (or life’s work) as riding a bicycle.

How is your speed? Are things moving along nicely, too slowly or too quickly for you?

What type of hill are you approaching? How will you help yourself ride to the top?

Will you be able to let yourself coast for awhile afterward or is there another hill just beyond?

When you reach your destination, how will you recognize your accomplishment?
